Official souvenir program of the Portland Rose Festival June 13–18, 1927 featuring mammoth pageant Rosaria. The 1927 Rose Festival Program’s cover features an illustration depicting characters from the Pageant Rosaria, which was one of the festival’s major attractions. The Pageant Rosaria had been performed at prior Rose Festivals, but in 1927 it drew an audience of 43,238 over five performances. According to an Oregonian article on June 18, 1927, in conjunction with the success of other events drawing proceeds, the success of the Pageant Rosaria led to 1927 being the first year in the Rose Festival’s history in which it paid for itself, with enough funds leftover for the following year’s festival. Within the 1927 program for the Rose Festival is the program for the Pageant Rosaria, which includes the names of the entire cast and chorus, the lyrics to the poems and songs in each act of the play, and small photographic busts of the key actors, the playwright, Doris Smith, and the composers, Charles Wakefield Cadman and Harker S. Perkins.

PURPOSES OF ROSE FESTIVAL
The Portland Rose Festival is a civic activity, sponsored by the people of the City of Portland annually as a community celebration in honor of the advent of the annual crop of roses which grow in profusion throughout the city and surrounding territory. The Rose Festival is intended to show to the world the spirit of hospitality and civic enterprise that has caused and is causing Portland to forge ahead as a thriving, enterprising city with cooperation and congeniality as watchwords. The City of Portland is glad of an opportunity to invite the world to spend a week each year in the full enjoyment of the scenic beauties and the other attractions that make Portland an outstanding city on the Pacific Coast.

Behold the English Rose of Peace! Altho its roots were drenched in blood, It flowered at last the Rose of Love.
Great feudal lords held sway on land and sea.
Old Albion was torn by civil war.
Should Lancaster or York ascend their country’s throne? Within the Temple Gardens, five great lords, dispute the cause. York cries, “Let him that is a true born gentleman,
And stands upon the honor of his birth,
From off this brier pluck, a white rose with me.”
Lancaster answers, “Let him that is no coward,
But dare maintain the party of the truth,
Pluck a red rose from off this thorn with me.”
So the Red Rose and the White
Became the symbol of the warring armies.
The War of Roses shook the land,

Brought from the south over the; trail worn by the bare feet of the padres,
The Rose planted by Margaret McLaughlin.
Behold the wind-blown western forest,
Where lived the Chinook, the Clatsop, the Multnomah.
Hear the tramp of the men of the Oregon Trail,
Adventuring first through the northwest mountains.
Look now upon the covered wagon train,
And feel the strength and power and courage Of those who built the first homes of Oregon.
And here again we plant the rose,
The Mission Rose of Oregon.
Behold our Queen, the Court of Rosaria,
Where blooms the Portland Rose.
Within our city gates for this one week Pay homage to the Rose.

Special Events of Rose Festival Week
POLICE REVIEW—
The Portland Bureau of Police will formally inaugurate the 1927 Rose Festival Monday at 10 A. M. with a review at Multnomah stadium followed by a parade-through the downtown streets. This will be participated in by all members of the department.
NEGRO JUBILEE SINGERS—
The noted Mt. Olivet Jubilee chorus will give a special program of negro spirituals and plantation melodies 7:45 P. M. to 8:30 P. M. Tuesday at Multnomah Civic Stadium. This organization, conducted by Miss Shirley McCann, has created a sensation in the musical world with several remarkable programs. The program at the stadium will be featured by the chorus and by a male quartet and a mixed quartet.
CHINESE DRAGON—
The Chinese of Portland have spent nearly $10,000 in the purchase and importation from China of an elaborate silk and tapestry dragon. This will be seen first in the . Merrykhana Parade Friday at 2:30 at the civic stadium. The dragon has been imported specially for the 1927 Rose Festival.
CHINESE CARNIVAL—
Chinatown will be thrown open Thursday and Friday of Rose Festival week for the first time in many years. The Chinese of Portland have invested many thousands of dollars in the purchase of equipment, firecrackers and Chinese costumes for use in the carnivals to be staged Thursday night in new Chinatown on Fourth street, and Friday night in old Chinatown on Second street. These districts have not been opened to the public for many years and are being opened this year as a special donation of the Chinese to the Rose Festival spirit.
AIR CIRCUS—
Army and civilian aviators will present a series of air thrills at the beginning of the floral parade Thursday and the Merrykhana Parade Friday. They will fly over Multnomah Civic Stadium. This event is under direction of Lieutenant Oakley Kelly of Vancouver Barracks. FESTIVAL CENTER—
The Festival Center located on the park blocks between Park, West Park, Jefferson and Salmon streets is one of the most colorful attractions of the Rose Festival. This center will be or*n throughout the week. As a special feature the Victor Talking Machine Company, through the courtesy of The Morning Oregonian, has brought to Portland the giant ortho-phonic Victrola. This will play concerts at Festival Center, each afternoon and evening. C. P. Keyser is Rose Festival director in charge of the Festival Center. The decorations were designed by Florence Holmes Gerke and executed by A. W. Nussbaumer. The illumination was installed by the Jagger-Sroufe Co. The florists of Portland are participating in the floral decorations.
MODEL BOAT REGATTA—
School boys of Portland and vicinity under the auspices of The Oregon Journal Juniors and the manual training department of the public schools are presenting this year for the first time a model boat contest and regatta. The boats built will be exhibited Tuesday, June 14, at 12 o’clock noon at Laurelhurst Park, followed at 2 o’clock with sailing contests on Laurelhurst Park Lake.
FIRE BUREAU EXHIBITION—
The Portland Bureau of Fire will stage a thrilling exhibition at Multnomah Stadium Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, showing the methods used in modern fire fighting and life saving. The exhibition will include work with fire apparatus, high jumps, wall scaling, fire fighting and other thrilling activities that are a part of the work of this department.

Portland has two large fire boats. These will be seen in full action Monday at 3:30 .?. M. and Wednesday at 10 A. M. and will give an exhibition Saturday night at 9:30 under illumination from ships and' docks.
THE GIANT VICTROLA—
Daily concerts will be given in Festival Center by the giant orthophonic Victrola. This instrument, built by the Victor Co. and shipped across the continent especially for the Rose Festival, weighs two and a half tons and may be heard for three miles. This event is sponsored by The Morning Oregonian.
ROYAL ROSARIANS—
The Rose Festival is sponsored by the Royal Rosarians. This organization takes into its membership distinguished visitors who attend Rose Festival. The ceremonial this year will be held at the Garden Theater at Washington Park, Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock. This event is public.
MILITARY PARADE—
The Oregon National Guard with 1500 troops will parade Monday evening at 7 o’clock, arriving at the Stadium at 7:45 to formally open the Pageant Rosaria with a thrilling military exhibition.
QUEEN’S CORONATION—
Queen Dorothy of the Rose Festival will be crowned with due pomp and ceremony by the Royal Rosarians at Laurelhurst Park Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Her reign over the realm of Rosaria extends throughout Rose Festival week.
BATTLESHIP OREGON—
Visit the Historic Battleship Oregon, docked at east end of Broadway Bridge. Open 9 A. M. to 9 P. M. daily.
