Few civic spectacles in the world surpass the beauty of the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade, which every year brings together up to 50 floats, completely decorated with natural flowers . . . dozens of outstanding bands . . . scores of gaily caparisoned horses. The parade will start in the Memorial Coliseum, where there are theatre-type seats for 10,000

spectators, and will then travel Portland streets and bridges for a total of five miles. Floats will be gathered in an accessible location for two days’ viewing after the parade. Each Grand Floral Parade is the result of creative effort and hours of labor by many thousand people.

Portland has its own Junior Rose Festival Parade, with more than 10,000 children participating annually. The Junior Parade has been part of the Festival since 1922.

Gayest of all Rose Festival events is the Merry-khana Parade, which comes the first Saturday night of the Festival and gets the celebration off to a fast, funny start.

Fun for the whole family is concentrated in the Festival Center at Holladay Park — carnival rides, outdoor stage shows, food booths, exhibits — something doing every minute.

Older than the Rose Festival itself is the Portland Rose Show, which dates back to 1889. Every year, more than 20,000 gorgeous blossoms are entered in competition.

Returning to the Rose Festival for the fourth consecutive year, The Young Americans, a singing and dancing group without equal, have won the hearts of Portlanders with their gaiety, energy, and split-second performance of a wide variety of production numbers.

Marine Day on the Willamette River features water skiing, outboard racing, other aquatic events.

The selection and coronation of the new queen takes place at a colorful ceremony at the Memorial Coliseum, where 13 princesses from Portland high schools compete for the honor of ruling over Rosaria for the coming year.

Ships of the U.S. and Canadian Navies tie up at the Willamette River seawall, where visitors are welcome morning and afternoon during their stay.

Growing in interest and importance every year are the Rose Cup Sports Car Races at Delta Park, which attract 200 or more of the top racers from the West Coast.
