Second Avenue ATwater 2925 Out of the High Rent District Martin Gassner, Manager The United Kit Committee of Portland consists of representatives of many leading Jewish organizations of this city. It was organized for the purpose of putting forth a united effort in providing greatly needed aid to the civilians of the Soviet Union as they return to their war-torn and looted cities, towns and villages in the liberated areas. In a broader sense, the Committee feels that they are helping to cement a binding friendship between the peoples of the United States and the Soviet Union, and thus doing their part in laying a solid foundation for a permanent peace. During the past six months, the Committee has been instrumental in the shipment of 1,600 emergency supply kits, 6,000 pounds of clothing, and 100,000 sulpha drug tablets, through the Jewish Council for Russian War Relief. It is now active in helping to fulfill a quota of 5,000 new overcoats for women and children, 5,000 kits to provide the civilians with household necessities, and 5,000 jars of sulpha drug tablets to aid those recuperating from illnesses and injuries. This goal was announced at a recent Memorial Service meeting by the Oregon Committee of the Jewish Council for Russian War Relief through its Chairman, Mr. Aaron Popick, and approved by its Honorary Chairman, Mr. J. N. Barde. The United Kit Committee is greatly encouraged and inspired by the fact that the Jewry of Portland has thus far supported this vital and humane undertaking with such zeal and enthusiasm, and they feel secure in the knowledge that this magnificent support will be maintained as long as the need remains.
