WEST BURNSIDE AT TWENTY-FIRST CHATTER A critic once said, "One searches for words, but there are no words." Such is the situation tonight as we sit in this splendid Paramount Theater listening to so great an artist as Madame Kirsten Flagstad, Wagnerian prima donna of the Metropolitan Opera Company. To say that it is a glorious event would be putting it mildly. The combination of perfect acoustics, beautiful appointments, comfortable seats, and the marvelous voice of Madame Flagstad, brings together a fusion of indescribable emotions that lifts us high above the regular routine events of life. We are in a musical seventh heaven. As Northwest Representative of the San Carlo Grand Opera Company, Mr. William B. McCurdy, Portland impresario, had an excellent opportunity last year to learn of the favorable response to the movement to present the finer musical events in the deluxe motion picture houses. He conceived the plan of presenting a series of outstanding world-renowned concert attractions in the beautiful Paramount Theater. Tonight, we are realizing this dream come true. The management of the Paramount Theater has graciously agreed to suspend its picture policy for tonight and for the other nights on the series in order to give Portland this glorious opportunity. A word about the other attractions of the Paramount Concert Series. Little need be said of the great Rachmaninoff, pianist-composer, who will be presented on the Paramount stage on Friday evening, January 22. Everyone knows of him as the composer of "C-Sharp Minor Prelude." His third symphony was presented for the first time at the Philharmonic Symphony Concert in Philadelphia this Fall. W. de Basils, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, will be presented in a repertoire of ballets. Last season, hundreds of people were turned away from the Auditorium because there were not seats enough. We suggest that you secure your tickets early, if you have not already purchased a season book which assures you of the same excellent seat which you have now. In March, Mr. Fortune Gallo, will bring his San Carlo Grand Opera Company to the Paramount Theater in seven grand operas. The gala opening night will be Wednesday, March 17. Lawrence Tibbett, baritone, will sing on April 21st, and Nino Martini, tenor, will sing on May 10th. Such is the grand parade of musical events scheduled for the Paramount Theater. "Portland has an excellent reputation as a musical center of the Northwest," said Mr. McCurdy in a recent interview. "The marvelous audiences that attend and appreciate the various musical events add to the social and musical prestige of the city. It is my suggestion that everyone plan to attend the concerts given by the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Junior Symphony Orchestra, the Ellison-White Series at the Auditorium, and, of course, the Paramount Concert Series at the Paramount. Plan to hear each of these great artists: Piatigorsky, Szigeti, Ljung-berg, MlLDNER, with the Portland Symphony; NELSON Eddy, ROLAND Hayes, Vienna Choir Boys, Richard Crooks, and the Joos European Ballet on the Ellison-White Series; and Rachmaninoff, Tibbett, Martini and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo on the Paramount Concert Series. And don't forget the opera."
