Synopsis of Haydn's "THE APOTHECARY" To the strains of typically Haydnesque music, "The Apothecary" follows a plot that is simple despite its disguises and foils. It centers around Grillette, the pretty young ward of Sempronio, the apothecary. Her heart is interested in the bashful but attractive youth, Mengone, who has apprenticed himself to the apothecary only to be near her. There is a rich and conceited coxcomb, Volpino, who has set his deceitful heart upon having Grillette in spite of her aversion to him. Even old Sempronio, the apothecary, would like to marry his beautiful ward, although he does not tell her so at first. With these elements Haydn has made both humorous and dramatic use. When Volpino finds his suit scorned, he tries first to bribe the apothecary into giving up Grillette. Failing in this, he disguises himself as a notary, and in drawing up the marriage contract between the apothecary and his ward manages to substitute his own name. Being foiled in this, he returns disguised as the Pascha of Turkey on the pretext of buying the apothecary's drugs but in reality to abduct his ward. But Mengone has not been idle all this time, and after a wild scene, he clasps his sweetheart to his bosom while the villian goes off baffled and broken.
