The old bell, which proclaimed our liberty at the signing of the x'lmerican Declaration of Independence, was originally cast in Whitechapel, England. In 1751, the Assembly of Pennsylvania ordered a bell through its agents in London. In August, 1752, the bell arrived in Philadelphia. It was first rung August 27, 1753, to call the Pennsylvania Assembly together. It cracked, was recast, and rehung in 1753. It was rung in honor of various events, and muffled and tolled to denote public wrongs, and the decease of various dignitaries from time to time until 1835. During the funeral solemnities over the— remains of Chief Justice Marshall, the bell, while slowly tolling, parted through its great side, and has ever thereafter been silent. The following inscription from Lev. 25: 10, was cast in the bodv of the bell, around its rim, by its makers: "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land, to all the inhabitants thereof." The weight of the bell is 2,080 pounds. It is carefully and reverently treasured by the people of Pennsylvania in old Independence Hall, Philadelphia, where the Declaration of the Independence of the United States of America was prepared and signed by the Fathers.
