First World's Fair Ever Held West of the Rocky Mountains—Natural Beauty Unrivaled—Unique Demonstration of Marvelous Progress of Western America.
The Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition and Oriental Fair is the first international exposition, under the patronage of the United States Government, ever held west of the Rocky Mountains. It demonstrates the marvelous progress of Western America, since the exploration, one hundred years ago, of the Oregon country by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, which event it commemorates.
This Exposition is quite unlike its predecessors in that it combines with its broad scope the idea of compactness without crowding. It may be seen and comprehended within the time at the disposal of the average sightseer. Life, color and motion will be demonstrated in all exhibits. Many original features, not possible in former fairs, are presented.
The visitor to the Exposition finds every convenience for his comfort, both in the City of Portland and at the Exposition. Street-car service is excellent, and the grounds may be reached from the heart of the city in fifteen minutes. To reach the Exposition grounds from Union Station, where all trains entering Portland deposit their passengers, the visitors may take Morrison or Glisan Street cars direct to the fair grounds, or take any Fifth Street car, marked "South Portland," and transfer at Washington Street
PACIFIC BLANK BOOK CO., PRINTERS, 207 2D ST., PORTLAND
to a Washington Street car going west with a fair sign on it.
The Exposition grounds may also be reached by steamers on the Willamette River, which leave every few minutes from the foot of down-town streets for the Government peninsula entrance.
WEATHER AT PORTLAND.
Portland's climate is second to none in the United States. Statistics compiled by the government census bureau show it to be the second healthiest city in the country. Visitors to the Exposition will not experience discomfort from intense summer heat, which has been such a great detriment to other world's fairs. The night weather, throughout the season which the Exposition will be open, is extremely pleasant.
HACK AND CAB RATES IN THE CITY.
Hack ordered for immediate use, one person, not to
exceed one mile from office or stand.............. $ 0.50
For each additional mile or fraction thereof, 50 cents additional, and for each additional passenger, same as above.

Exclusive use of hack to meet train, steamship or boat............................................... 2.50
The above charges are the maximum rates permitted by city ordinance.

EXPLANATION.
Portland is laid out regularly, and the visitor will experience little difficulty in findng his way about. The Willamette River, a beautiful stream which is navigable for sea-going vessels, divides the city into two parts, known as the East and the West Side. The West side is the principal commercial district, and contains several of the most desirable residential sections, the East Side being a manufacturing and residential section. The Exposition grounds are on the West Side, and most people who come to the fair will find accommodations on this side.
The streets running north and south are numbered First, Second, Third, etc., with the exception of Front Street and several short streets in the southern part of the city. Of the streets which run east and west, part are named arbitrarily, but those north of Ankeny, which divides the city into two almost equal north and south portions, are named in alphabetical progression.
Street numbers run 20 to the block, east and west of Front Street, north and south of Ankeny. At first this will be found rather confusing to the person who has been accustomed to living in a city where 100 numbers are the rule, but one readily becomes accustomed to the change. Portland blocks are uniformly 200 feet square, which is smaller than in most cities, and twenty blocks make a mile. On every corner, plain street signs are found fastened to posts or buildings.
THE AMERICAN INN.
The American Inn, a 600-room hotel within the Exposition Grounds, provides excellent accommodation at reasonable rates for 2,000 persons. The Inn is located on the shore of Guild's Lake, the natural "grand basin" of the Exposition, and adjoins the Esplanade, a promenade more than half a mile in length extending along the lake front. The Inn faces the United States Government Buildings on the peninsula in the center of the lake, and from the broad verandas a sweeping view of the entire Exposition and of the river and mountain scenery may be obtained. This ideal location makes the American Inn a veritable summer resort hostelry.
The structure is built with two ells and an interior court which has been transformed into a beautiful
flower garden. This arrangement makes every room an outside one and provides an abundance of light and air. Electrical communication from the rooms to the office insures good service. All the hall floors are sound-deadened so that guests can rest well at night. Fire escapes are provided on all sides of the building; also night patrol system which guarantees absolute safety to guests.
A buffet, barber shop, news stand, booths where guests may purchase collars, cuffs, haberdashery, notions—in fact everythng that is needed for comfort and amusement are provided.
The rates of the Inn are fixed and controlled by the Exposition Company and will be maintained throughout the Exposition period. The rates named below are for each person and include daily admission to the grounds after one has become a registered guest.

MRS. J. T. McCREADY, General Manager American Inn Company, World's Fair Grounds, Portland, Oregon.
TEMPORARY HOTELS.
Besides the many established hotels and boarding houses, there are scores of temporary hotels erected in the immediate vicinity of the Exposition grounds, which afford accommodations for many thousands of guests.
The Hill Military Academy on Marshall street, between 24th and 25th streets, in the vicinity of the fair grounds, has been converted into a hotel. Rooms may be had on the European plan from $1.50 a day up.
CAMPING GROUNDS.
West of the Exposition grounds a considerable amount of unoccupied land furnishes unrivaled facilities for camping parties. Persons desiring to live out of doors during their stay in the fair city can find no place on earth more desirable for such a life than Portland. The climate is ideal, the nights being cool, and the mosquitos and other pests rare. A virgin woodland reaches down almost to the Exposition grounds, and from this location the scenery is unsurpassed, the view from the heights, which includes the city, the fair grounds, the river and distant mountains, being one never to be forgotten.
FREE INFORMATION BUREAUS.
For the purpose of precluding any possibility of extortion by hotel and lodging house keepers, the Exposition Free Accommodation Bureau has been established. The bureau is under the general supervision of the Exposition Company, and works in harmony with it. The bureau's offices are in the Good-nough building, corner Fifth and Yamhill Streets.
This bureau has on its lists, hotels and lodging houses of all classes that have entered into written agreements to furnish accommodations at reasonable rates. Rooms may be contracted for in advance.
The Portland Young Men's Christian Association has organized a World's Fair Bureau through which it is prepared to furnish good accommodations at reasonable rates to members of the Association throughout the country and their friends. Lodgings
are reserved in advance in hotels and boarding houses and private families. No charge is made to patrons for this service. Address Harry W. Stone, secretary, Y. M. C. A. building, corner Fourth and Yamhill Streets, Portland.
Many of the local fraternal associations of Portland maintain at their headquarters information bureaus for the members of the several organizations, where arrangements for hotels, lodgings and transportation are attended to.
A number of state societies have been formed, composed of natives of several different states now residing in Oregon. These societies provide information for the residents of the different states attending the fair, and a secretary at a down-town headquarters attends to the wants of strangers.
In addition to these bureaus of information are maintained at the headquarters of the Christian Endeavor Association and the Epworth League, and many of the business houses, both wholesale and retail, and leading manufacturers, information bureaus for the accommodation of their patrons. Portland's several commercial organizations, including the Commercial Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Board of Trade, likewise furnish information to visitors.
