Synopsis: In the hurrying throng of a continental city are seen the Young Girl and the Young Workman, her sweetheart, homeward-bound after the day's work. The Libertine, in search of new conquests, follows the Young Girl to her home. Dazzled by the promise of adventure, she fares forth on his arm to the dance halls, where disillusion awaits her. Scene 1. THE GENTLEMEN IN BLACK—Around the Green Table an excited conference. The result is war. Scene 2. THE FAREWELLS—A figure emerges from the darkness. Death, in the panoply of the War God, summons the Standard-Bearer, who in turn calls the men to arms. They bid farewell to wives, sweethearts and mothers. The Profiteer appears. Scene 3. THE BATTLE—In which the actual fighting is suggested. The War Profiteer gets to work. Scene 4. THE REFUGEES—A group of women advances slowly and painfully. When suddenly confronted by Death, they break and flee; all, save the Old Mother, who, unafraid, finds deliverance. Scene 5. THE TRAITOR. Scene 6. THE AFTERMATH. Scene 7.
