Protest against The Birth of a Nation

Description

This set of letters, dated between April 7, 1915 and June 21, 1915, shows the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) National Office assisting the Portland NAACP's protest against The Birth of a Nation. The last document is a copy of the letter to the Mayor of Portland, H. R.Albee, from The Portland branch of the NAACP. In this letter the NAACP argues that the source material for the film was designed to create prejudice and race hatred. The letter closes with a petition asking the Mayor to review the film with the Censor Board and prevent its exhibition in the city.
