Look to Your Library for Learning and Pleasure —an invitation from MULTNOMAH COUNTY LIBRARY Dedicated and Geared to Serve the People of Multnomah County During its 108 years of service your Library, like other successful organizations, has been tailored to the needs of its patrons. Books, personnel and facilities have been acquired and maintained to provide maximum service to people of the County while holding operating costs within reasonable limits. Severe budgetary difficulties during the summer and fall months of 1972 imposed certain restrictions on Library activities. Every effort has been made to retain all possible services. All Branch libraries were retained, and Bookmobile service was continued. The crisis, made endurable by your understanding and patience, is now past. Lessons learned during the period will be remembered, and economies during the crisis are being continued. Other activities, particularly in the area of book acquisition, have resumed their normal pace. A good indicator of the Library's service to the people of the area may be found in the following statistics which summarize the operations of the year 1971-1972: HOLDINGS Number of books at beginning of year 952,807 Added during year 60,474 Books at end of year 1,013,281 Number of color prints 1,009 Number of 16 mm films 789 Number of 8 mm films 336 Phonograph records (albums) 10,007 Picture clippings 1,500,000 Number of slides 11,205 SERVICE STATISTICS *Number of individuals visiting Library 1,125,754 * Number of telephone queries answered 126,459 * Attendance at film showings 14,855 *Meetings in community rooms 1,272 Children touring Library in groups 10,394 Attendance at Children's Story Hours 12,826 Attendance at films shown to children 4,561 Classroom visits 1,235 Population served 556,667 Borrowers registered during year 55,361 Total number of registered borrowers 259,971 *Central Library only.
