Description
The Great Republic ran aground on Sand Island in the Columbia River on April 19, 1879. 11 crew members drowned. The 378 foot long ship carried 800 passengers on a run from Portland, Oregon, to San Francisco, California. It could make it from Portland to Astoria, Oregon, in 5 hours and 15 minutes.
